The adaptive optics facility (AOF), key to correcting image distortion as the light travels through the atmosphere, uses a number of PI translation stages. The image distortion or blurring effect of the Earth’s atmosphere is what causes the stars to twinkle to the naked eye.
Physik Instrumente (PI) UK, a renowned provider of specialist motion control and precision alignment systems, marked its 10th anniversary by welcoming visitors to the official opening of its recently extended office and customer demonstration facility in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, on Wednesday the 18th of July 2018.
This week PI UK celebrated 10 years of service.
Kevin Grimley, managing Director at PI UK said “A big thank you to all our customers who have worked with us over the last 10 years. It has been a decade of growth where PI has developed from a being world renowned supplier of nanopositioning technology to a global company capable of providing solutions into the most demanding industrial precision alignment applications. The next ten years will be just as exciting as our ambitious plans for the future start to take shape. We look forward to working with you.”
Custom-built apparatus allows the laboratory to look at how the microscopic features of specific minerals ultimately influence the mechanics of plate tectonics.

Earth science is a highly interdisciplinary subject with a focus on understanding the processes behind the formation and evolution of the solid earth, its oceans and atmosphere. At the University of Oxford, researchers are investigating the science behind rock deformations, using equipment developed in collaboration with PI to look at how the microscopic features of specific minerals ultimately influence the mechanics of plate tectonics.
