The adaptive optics facility (AOF), key to correcting image distortion as the light travels through the atmosphere, uses a number of PI translation stages. The image distortion or blurring effect of the Earth’s atmosphere is what causes the stars to twinkle to the naked eye.

At the University of Oxford, researchers are investigating the science behind rock deformations, using equipment developed in collaboration with PI to look at how the microscopic features of specific minerals ultimately influence the mechanics of plate tectonics.
